Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my roof needs to be replaced?

Sometimes, there are obvious signs of roof trouble, such as missing shingles. More often than not, these are less obvious, but some things can be checked for. For example, algae stains on roofs are common after 7 to 10 years of life; these are good signs that it’s time to get a roof inspection. Also, be on the lookout for granular buildup in gutters or at the bottom of downspouts as, over time, this builds and is a sign that your roof will be at the end of its life.

What causes a roof to wear out?

Lots of things can cause roofs to fail. The most common are storms and natural weather environments, as several things can affect it, such as direct sun, shade, etc. Also, proper ventilation is an essential part of your roof that can change years of lifespan for a roof.

How long will it take for you to do my roof?

There is no perfect answer, as there are a lot of factors that can change the timeline. However, one to two days is a good average for residential homes but can vary depending on home size. Specialty items such as Slate, Cedar shake, synthetic composite, and standing seam are much more labor intensive and can take a substantial amount of time, such as multiple days or weeks.

How long do new roofs last?

Roofs are known to last anywhere from 10 to 50 years. A lot of this depends on the type of roof you have.

How often should I have my roof inspected?

After installing a new roof, we recommend having your roof inspected after five years. Afterward, we recommend an inspection every couple of years for maintenance purposes. Once your roof is closer to 12 years or older, it is a good idea to have it checked annually.

How can I extend my roof's life?

The best options to expand the life of your roof are the quality of the roof you choose and ensure you have the correct roofing ventilation system.

Can I have a second layer of shingles installed over my current roof?

Technically, yes. We don’t typically perform “roof over” installation. We must remove the old roof and inspect the roof deck and flashings to replace rotten wood or damaged flashing. Therefore we can’t ensure a quality installation per our standards.

Do the black streaks and stains on my roof mean it's time to replace it?

No, brown or black algae growth on your asphalt shingles will not hurt your shingle’s performance. It doesn’t look excellent but will not affect the shingle surface. Removing the algae is optional and can be done using bleach and TSP solution, but it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the roof and the plants surrounding your home. For example, never use a power washer on your roof surface!
